Session 1- Introduction Whole class true / false slide share with some statements around topic to find out what they know or don't know. Then in groups of 4 provide pre-made bags with labels proteins, fats, carbohydrates etc and examples of foods. Get chn to sort where they think things go and place on a pyramid template. Tchr question, monitor grps. Share Food pyramid with class on IWB. Chn compare how went. Discuss, question. Recreate food pyramid as whole class using magazine or indiv using online food pyramid pdf photocopy sheet
Session 2 Read exerts from 'Eating Right: how can you make good food choices?'Investigate good bad eating habits. Get chn use diary of foods eaten in past few days. Compare with pyramid. How are they going? Record reflection on a keynote slide titled 'My healthy eating journey.' Encourage chn to keep adding reflections to this each week during study.

Investigate what is really in our foods?
How can we be sure of what we are eating is ok for us?
Session 3Look at packaging of an assortment of food goods. Make a class list of some of the unusual ingredients they find. Divide list using internet and dictionary to find out what they are, and their value to the food. Share findings as whole class. Discuss findings and any surprises. How can they use this info to improve their food choices What are the alternatives? Organic Farming?
Session 4-5Introduce idea of class vege patch. Collect suggestions of what to grow. Watch you tube 'organic gardening' Chn plan and plant out garden with parent helpers. Make a class roster to tend the garden, water, etc. Record process of making a garden using cameras, flip minos. using comic life. Display on class room wall using comic life.

Session 6Plan for a visit to a farmers market. What is a farmers market? What might they see. View organic farming You tube Prepare questions to ask consumers and sellers about food choices.
Session 7 Farmers market visit
In pairs Interview stall holders at your local growers market. Question them about the reasons for selling their product in this way - benefits and draw backs. Film your interview flip minos/ video. Use info for a written report on keynote or use as a podcast on class wiki page

Session 8Discuss -Why do people make the choices they do? Brainstorm using kidspiration Lead into ADVERTISING. Watch Birke Baehr video. Discuss their thoughts.
Session 9-10Guided reading using "Advertising Attack" how is an ad made? pg 11-14. What strategies are used? pg 15-23. Then using that knowledgeof strategies watch as a class a variety of videos on Video link page eg. Cadbury Gorilla video Discuss which strategies were used?
Focus: Discuss and analyse language, meanings and ideas in the specific advertisements studied
Guided reading "Big Fat Lies" pg 4-5
Make a vocabulary list of words used in advertising. Copy these into Wordle to be displayed in class.
Read "Happy Birthday" Pt 4 No.2 1999 Create an ad to be read over the radio for a new food using no more than 30 words.

Collect food ads from TV and other sources eg. magazines, newpaper, radio, 'junk' mail

Conduct investigations and display findings using graphs.
What have we discovered about food advertising?
Session 10-Using data collected from homework study the language and style used. Discuss the inferences of the advertiser i.e. target audience, time slots, note, models. In groups get chn to categorise them according to a decided criteria. Share with another group and justify their decisions.
Session 11 - 12Branding Conduct class survey brands and marketing of cereal products. Why do you prefer to buy this one? Discuss features ie colour, logo,pricing etc Display info using computer generated graphs. Perform a blind food test with budget cornflakes, skippies, kelloggs, santitaruim, pams. Make predictions Which did they prefer? Were they surprised by the results? Again Display info using computer generated graphs.
In grps of 4, pairs of indiv do one of the following tasks, using learning from this weeks topic
Design own TV advert
Create a jingle/rap OR
Design a new poster to go in a bus stop near you selling a new brand of cereal or snack food

Unpacking all the information
How can i make wise and informed decisions for me?
Session 15 Initiate a group discussion around how they can use the information and learning they have done this term to make healthier food choices for themselves. In groups get children to jot down what steps they would take when choosing a snack. Read 'Big Fat Lies' pg 22- 25 Groups share ideas then Create a class action plan eg. Identify my choices, Evaluate each choice, Identify healthiest decision, Act, Evaluate.
Session 16- Introduce Assessment task to students. Model wiki page set up. Make a list with class of possible topics to investigate further. Monitor and help children who need extra support (Question 4 maybe optional for some students)
Opportunity to complete unfinished activities during term i.e. keynote slides

On your own wiki page 1.Design an attractive and catchy heading using text and images on our Advertising food topic. 2. Reflect and share your thoughts on this question "Does the advertising I see influence the food choices I make?"You may like to include links to interesting websites or video clips to support your work. 3. Share a favourite healthy recipe 4.Investigate a little further an aspect of our topic that you have found interesting i.e. Vitamins, Organic Farming, The chemicals in our foods, Marketing/Branding Advertising. Write a few paragraphs on your chosen topic. Include links, images.
NB Assessment Task Teacher will need to discuss / revise safe internet practices etc. (refer to Student Example page and teacher demo page for students)

Session 17 Planning for Celebratory task Turn class into cafe for the day. Using the produce from the class garden in mind create a healthy class menu. Students make suggestions. Vote on 4-6 options decide on pricing. Divide class into jobs. 1. design menu, word publishing 2. Advertising day, flyers, school radio etc 3. Cafe signage for the class 4.Design Tickets for cafe word publishing. Presell tickets and meal choice a few days out so chn can prepare and purchase food. Perhaps limit to 30. Use parent helpers to support food prep tasks.
Homework- visit a local cafe . Take note of the signage, setting out of the menu, seating and food on offer to help you in your planning of the class task. You may like to take photos ask owner first.
